Mookie Betts gives back to the community when not playing in Dodger Stadium. For his efforts, MLB has awarded him a great accolade.

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been awarded the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award for his efforts beyond the baseball diamond.

Betts was honored for his work in his 5050 Foundation.

"Betts was recognized for his extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions through his work with his 5050 Foundation," Dodgers reporter Sonja Chen wrote for MLB.com. Chen pointed out that Betts is the first Dodgers player to win the honor since Justin Turner did in 2022.

Dodgers veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who is in his final MLB season, won the Clemente Award back in 2012.

For MLB fans who don't know, the Roberto Clemente Award is named for the late, legendary Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder who lost his life in a plane crash while delivering supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua. Clemente played his heart out while on the field, always giving 100 percent as a player and equally as a humanitarian.

According to Chen, Betts founded the 5050 Foundation alongside his wife, Brianna, in 2021. The organization has established outlets in Los Angeles and Nashville. The foundation helps young people in those communities to "develop resources for success, based around four pillars: physical fitness, mental and emotional health, nutrition and financial literacy."

When Betts learned of his nomination for the Clemente Award back in September, he was quite happy with the honor at that time.

"It just means the world," Betts said. "This isn't something that you get judged on based on your performance. It's something that you just do out of the kindness of your heart. Just caring about people, man.

"It's just opportunities to do something that don't have anything to do with talent," Betts said. "Those are things that I genuinely care about, and I feel like this reward shows that."

Betts received the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award before Game 3 of the 2025 World Series between the Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays at Dodger Stadium.

Additionally, Betts is deeply involved with Dodgers' community activities in the Greater Los Angeles area. For instance, during Juneteenth, he invited the Baseball Generations organization to Dodger Stadium for an educational program and a ballgame. Then Betts also hosted a celebrity softball game in recognition of Black Heritage Night.

With this well-deserved honor in hand, Betts now turns his attention to helping the Dodgers win Game 3 with Tyler Glasnow on the mound for Los Angeles against Toronto's Max Scherzer. First pitch on Monday night is at 8 p.m. Eastern and the game will be televised on Fox.
