When Hyeseong Kim stepped into the batter's box on Wednesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers, he meant business.
Kim, a second baseman for the Dodgers, went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and added a stolen base to his big day. Kim played a role in the Dodgers' 10-7 Cactus League win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Los Angeles remains a perfect 5-0 for Spring Training play heading into Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
While he's getting in some work at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona, Kim will soon be taking part in the World Baseball Classic. He will be playing for Team Korea in the tournament.
But Kim needs to stay healthy for the Dodgers.
Last season, Kim spent time between the minors and majors. In 71 regular-season games for Los Angeles, Kim had a slash line of .280/.385/,699 with three home runs and 17 RBIs.
The Dodgers signed Kim as a free agent back in January 2025. In mid-March, the ballclub optioned Kim to their Triple-A ballclub in Oklahoma City. Then, on May 3, the team recalled Kim from Oklahoma City. He made another trip down for a rehab assignment during the season.
Kim played in two postseason games as the Dodgers roared their way to a second straight World Series championship. He scored just one run in his postseason appearances.
According to Baseball Savant, Kim saw a steady diet of fastballs when at the plate. Pitchers challenged him with a breaking ball, followed by a changeup. Kim did his best to make consistent contact last season.
What can the Dodgers hope to see this season from Kim after he wraps up play in the WBC? Hopefully, he will provide a steadying influence at second base when he plays. Kim has experience in pro ball after spending time in the Korean Baseball League.
In looking at his plate discipline statistics, Kim had a 66.0% zone swing percentage, a 78.1% zone contact percentage, and a 35.1% chase percentage last season. Of course, any good hitter wants to make solid contact within the strike zone.
Kim can work on his technique at the plate, while also looking to sharpen up his defensive skills, during Spring Training. He'll get even more time to work on these things during the WBC while, hopefully for him, leading Team Korea to a championship.
Look for Kim to have a good season for the Dodgers, hopefully playing a major role in getting the ballclub back to the World Series for a third straight season.
