Jordan Weems probably wanted to go out and perform well for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Well, that didn't happen as the Athletics put together a four-run rally against Weems en route to an 11-7 Cactus League victory.
Weems saw some MLB action last season with the Houston Astros, but wasn't kept by the ballclub for this season. The Dodgers took a flier on Weems who, besides the Astros, has also pitched for the Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Washington Nationals.
Andy Pages hit his first Spring Training home run in the first inning, putting the Dodgers up early 1-0. In the second inning, Nick Senzel hit an RBI double, scoring Dalton Rushing, for a 2-0 Los Angeles lead. Ryan Ward followed with another RBI double, driving home Senzel and giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Alex Call smacked a solo homer to extend Los Angeles' lead to 4-0. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Athletics' Leo De Vries hit a solo home run to cut into the Los Angeles lead at 7-2. De Vries wasn't through hitting long balls on Sunday, either.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, De Vries slammed a grand slam home run and pushed the Athletics closer to the Dodgers at 7-6. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Andy Ibáñez hit a ground-rule double to left-center field. Clark Elliott scored and the game was tied 7-7 at that point.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth rolled around with Weems on the mound for the Dodgers. Clark Elliott's one-out single to right scored Cade Marlowe, putting the Athletics up 8-7. Ryan Lasko moved to third base on the hit.
Still with one out, Ibáñez singled to left, scoring Lasko and moving Elliott to second base. The Athletics were up 9-7 and they added two more runs off of Weems.
In the eighth inning alone, Weems, now 0-2 in spring action, gave up five hits, four runs (all earned), didn't walk a batter, and struck out one. After his outing on Sunday, Weems' ERA in Spring Training now sits at 18.00.
The Athletics' Zane Taylor picked up the win in relief.
Call and Pages had two hits apiece in the game.
The Dodgers, now 10-6 in Cactus League play, go up against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, followed by a Tuesday game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Monday's first pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET, while Tuesday's first pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m. ET.
