Los Angeles Dodgers president Stan Kasten does not expect federal investigations involving controlling owner Mark Walter’s to affect the team’s operations or future.
The Los Angeles Dodgers do not expect the ongoing federal investigations involving controlling owner and chairman Mark Walter’s business interests to alter the direction of the franchise.
Dodgers president Stan Kasten addressed the situation Friday, maintaining that the organization remains focused on competing and does not anticipate a change in ownership anytime soon.
Questions surrounding Walter have increased in recent weeks following reports involving TWG Global, the diversified holding company he leads. The company has faced federal scrutiny over potential loan fraud. The situation has also drawn additional attention after Walter recently sold his stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, less than a year after the NBA approved his purchase of the franchise.
More recently, reports indicated that Walter was discussing a potential sale of his interest in Chelsea F.C., creating further uncertainty surrounding some of his sports investments.
Kasten, however, emphasized that the Dodgers remain separate from those developments and said there is no current process underway to sell the club.
Walter has been the Dodgers’ controlling owner since Guggenheim Baseball Management acquired the team in 2012. Under that ownership group, Los Angeles has become one of baseball’s most successful organizations, capturing 12 of the past 13 National League West titles and three World Series championships over the last six seasons.
The Dodgers have also developed a reputation for aggressively investing in their roster. The organization has regularly spent heavily in free agency and has continued to add high-profile talent in an effort to remain among baseball’s top teams.
Kasten indicated that approach is not expected to change because of the circumstances surrounding Walter’s business interests.
The Dodgers operate as a major business with significant revenue streams of their own, and Kasten said the club has the financial resources necessary to continue operating as it has in recent years. That includes maintaining the organization’s ability to invest in its roster and compete for championships.
Walter’s broader sports portfolio also includes interests in the Professional Women’s Hockey League and motorsports. While his recent moves involving the Lakers and Chelsea have prompted speculation about his plans, Kasten indicated that the Dodgers remain a particularly important part of Walter’s sports holdings.
For the Dodgers, the message from their president is that business will continue as usual. The organization does not anticipate being forced into major changes because of the investigations surrounding TWG Global, nor does it appear prepared to alter its long-term strategy.
As the Dodgers continue pursuing another postseason run, Kasten’s comments provide reassurance that ownership uncertainty outside the organization is not expected to become an issue inside the clubhouse or front office.
