Los Angeles Dodgers Face Adjustments Without Tommy Edman cover image

Tommy Edman will not be ready to go on Opening Day, so Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has to adjust.

With news coming out on Monday morning that second baseman-outfielder Tommy Edman will miss Opening Day due to recovering from ankle surgery, the Los Angeles Dodgers have to adjust.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts understands that Edman needs time to get ready for the regular season. Without Edman being prepared to take the field, he's going to have to get busy and change some things up.

Edman addressed his situation on Monday, according to Dodgers beat reporter Sonja Chen of MLB.com.

"I had a month last year," Edman told Chen and other reporters about having a healthy ankle. "Hopefully I have a full season this year."

Edman did put in a lot of work in the offseason, trying to get in shape for a full 162-game schedule. Yet it's just not going to happen. Edman admitted that he's worked hard to get in game shape, too.

"Opening Day was going to be a really aggressive goal," Edman said, "just in case it happened to be, like, we recover faster than we expected it to.

"I think everything is based on past instances with this kind of surgery," Edman said. "… I feel like I'm on schedule with that, and we’ll just kind of see how it goes with each step along the way."

One thing that Roberts might have wanted to do is include Kiké Hernández in any spot that Edman might have filled. But Hernández, too, is not going to be ready to go on Opening Day himself.

In looking at the center-field situation, Andy Pages is getting penciled in as the starter there. But the Dodgers don't have much depth behind Pages. So, if Pages somehow gets injured, then Roberts will have to do even more work adjusting his lineup card.

Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland could see some time there, too, since Edman isn't available. Chen pointed out that Kim made 17 appearances (nine starts) in center field last year. He did not make an error in 85 1/3 innings while playing in center field for Roberts.

What about second base? Chen indicates that Miguel Rojas "should be the primary right-handed-hitting option."

The Dodgers didn't really want to have this type of situation crop up so soon. Yet the good thing, if there is a silver lining, is that Edman can get ready for the rest of the season. He definitely wants to be in game shape when he takes the field.

Roberts probably can put up without having Edman available right now. Hopefully, Edman gets his ankle issues fixed and gets back into the Dodgers' lineup as soon as possible.
