Los Angeles Dodgers fans have become used to seeing Tommy Edman play at second base, and that very well might happen again this season.
Yet there's an interesting battle brewing for who just might start at second base for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts coming out of Spring Training at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.
Would you rather see Hyeseong Kim or Alex Freeman there? Will either one stick there after Edman gets healthy again?
It's an interesting thought on a Saturday as the Dodgers get ready for a Saturday afternoon Cactus League game against the Colorado Rockies at Camelback Ranch. First pitch for this game is at 8:05 p.m. ET.
Senior MLB Writer Eno Sarris of The Athletic has written a lengthy article on a number of Spring Training position battles taking place across the MLB scene. While mentioning other teams, Sarris pointed out the current second-base situation for the Dodgers.
"Hyeseong Kim may have the inside shot at the job, but consider the role of the World Baseball Classic in this roster battle," Sarris wrote. "The downside of playing there is that he’s away from the Dodgers, but the upside is that his team gets to see him in high-intensity, important situations as he competes for his country.
"Alex Freeland is striking out less so far in camp, and if that holds, he has more power upside than Kim," Sarris continued. "If it doesn’t hold, neither profiles as an everyday starter, and they’ll probably cede their playing time to Tommy Edman when he’s healthy again."
Edman is still recovering from having right ankle surgery during the offseason.
Right now, Kim is 6-for-13 in Spring Training play with five RBIs and two stolen bases. Kim has a slash line of .462/.462/1.154 in Cactus League play, according to MLB.com statistics for him. During the 2025 regular season, Kim hit three home runs with seven RBIs and had a slash line of .280/.314/.699 for the Dodgers.
Freeland, in Spring Training play right now, is 3-for-21 with four RBIs.
Who will come out on top here? Kim's numbers obviously look much, much better than Freeland's data at this point.
So, Roberts will have to weigh a decision on who will stand tall at second base.
It's worth watching how this battle shapes up during the final days of Cactus League play in Arizona.
