Who Will Start at Second Base for Dodgers? cover image

Hyeseong Kim, Alex Freeland are in a race to see who gets starting nod from Los Angeles Dodgers' Dave Roberts.

For the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans, a question on a Sunday morning days away from Opening Day is this: "What's on second?"

No, the franchise isn't asking "Who's on first?" in a way that Bud Abbott and Lou Costello might banter about in their classic vaudeville routine. Everyone knows that Freddie Freeman will man that position.

At this point in Cactus League play, Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland are in a battle for that second base role. Kim has been away from the Dodgers to play in the World Baseball Classic. Now that his team's WBC time is done, Kim is headed back to Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.

Freeland hasn't really proven to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts that he's the man for the job, either.

Dodgers beat reporter Sonja Chen of MLB.com took a look at some key questions facing the team at this point in Spring Training. In her story, Chen took some time to lay out what's happening at second base.

"This position battle was on pause while Hyeseong Kim was at the Classic, but after Team Korea was eliminated by the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals, Kim is on his way back to Dodgers camp and is expected to be in the lineup on Sunday," Chen wrote.

"Kim and No. 8 prospect Alex Freeland have essentially been competing to be the left-handed side of a second-base platoon, if manager Dave Roberts ends up handling it that way," Chen continued.

She pointed out that Kim hit for a healthy .462 average in four Cactus League games. Yet, in the WBC, Kim just hit 1-for-12 with a home run. That was it for Kim's production in the tournament.

"Freeland has shown some impressive plate discipline, but perhaps a tad too much," Chen wrote. "He's drawn 10 walks but hit only 4-for-31 (.129) in 14 games. As Roberts sees it, the competition 'hasn't changed a whole lot' since Kim left."

Those words from Roberts don't paint a pretty picture in Freeland's corner. He had plenty of time while Kim was away to put his stamp on a starting second base job.

Kim is now coming back into Spring Training and will get his hacks in at the plate. Of course, he'll also be able to show Roberts what he can do in the field.

The decision about second base, and who starts there, will be one that might go all the way to Opening Day. It'll be worth watching to see what happens here.
