As the Los Angeles Dodgers are getting settled into a Spring Training routine this week, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts can rest easy when it comes to his bullpen situation.
Now, does this mean that everything is lining up perfectly for the Dodgers when Roberts has pitching coach Mark Prior make a call to the bullpen? In some ways, yes; in other ways, well, it might be worth checking out.
On Tuesday, Dodgers reporter Sonja Chen of MLB.com offered some insights into the Dodgers' bullpen situation.
For starters, Chen points out who are pretty much lead-pipe locks to make the Dodgers' bullpen this season. Besides right-handed pitcher Edwin Díaz, who will fill the closer's role, other names Chen pointed out include left-handers Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia, and right-handers Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen.
Fret not, Dodgers fans. The days of getting the jitters over Treinen or Scott coming into the ninth inning, unless Díaz gets injured, are pretty much over.
"With the addition of Díaz on a three-year, $69 million contract, the back end of the 'pen looks awfully dangerous," Chen wrote. "Then again, the Dodgers seemed to have assembled a superpowered bullpen last year, and it did not perform up to their expectations.
"While the Dodgers have been hesitant to pencil in anyone definitively as their closer since the days of Kenley Jansen, Díaz is taking over the job in his first year in L.A.," Chen continued
"That could help stabilize the roles for Scott (4.74 ERA in 2025) and Treinen (5.40 ERA), both of whom are seeking to rebound from a tough year," Chen wrote. "Vesia was one of the Dodgers' steadiest relievers, and in all likelihood, he'll reprise his fireman role in the late innings."
Chen then pointed out some of the other options for the rest of the Dodgers' bullpen spots. They include right-handers Ben Casparius, Edgardo Henriquez, Kyle Hurt, Will Klein, and Brock Stewart. As for left-handers, Chen pointed out Jack Dreyer and Justin Wrobleski
But there also some other considerations to be looked at from a depth perspective for the Dodgers.
"On the 40-man roster, the Dodgers have some additional depth pieces who could see time with the big-league pitching staff: Left-hander Ronan Kopp and right-handers Paul Gervase, Landon Knack and Bobby Miller," Chen wrote.
"Miller is an interesting case, just two years removed from being viewed as a potential No. 2 starter," Chen added. "He struggled both as a starter and a reliever last year with Triple-A Oklahoma City."
In the big picture, the Dodgers are going into this season, one in which they are looking for a third straight World Series championship, in much better shape in the bullpen than they were last season.
That's a scary proposition for the rest of the National League and MLB overall. Dodgers fans are sure going to look forward to hearing Timmy Trumpet sound the tune to bring Díaz in from the bullpen.
Roberts will get a chance to see all of these relievers get some time on the mound during Spring Training. He'll be able to make roster considerations on what he sees, along with getting information from Prior's perspective as well.
It's a good thing that Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes were able to bring in a guy like Díaz. Those ninth-inning moments are bound to be electric at Dodger Stadium.
Pay attention, though, to whom Roberts gives the ball to late in Spring Training games. He might look at a couple of other options as closers just in case. Sure, Díaz is going to be the main closer. That's a lock. But Roberts might also want to have another option in his back pocket just in case.
All in all, the Dodgers' bullen looks to be in a pretty good place.
