When the Los Angeles Dodgers probably started chatting up free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker, they had his agent's number on speed dial. Tucker knows his agent, Casey Close of Excel Sports Management, would made sure that Tucker wasn't being left out in the cold.
Well, King Tuck doesn't have to worry about the cold. He's going to be residing in sunny Southern California for a few years.
Tucker and the Dodgers, through Excel, reached a deal for four years and worth $240 million dollars. That's on top of what the Dodgers spent to sign free agent reliever Edwin Díaz this offseason.
What's even more amazing about this deal getting done on Thursday night is that there had been some talk about Tucker not wanting to play in a big market. Tucker's career started out with the Houston Astros and, well, Houston isn't really considered a big market.
That's weird because Houston is one of the biggest cities and metropolitan areas in the United States. Nevertheless, big-market teams are usually considered in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
So, forget all that small-market chatter.
When Tucker gets to spring training, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is going to give him a big hug. Not only to welcome him to the world of Dodgers baseball, but because Tucker will go right in and become an asset in the outfield.
There's no secret that Los Angeles was looking for an upgrade in the outfield after last season. Sure, their outfield helped the Dodgers pick up a second consecutive World Series title in beating the Toronto Blue Jays.
Oh, what about Toronto. The Blue Jays and Mets were two teams, along with the Dodgers, that happened to be mentioned in a Thursday morning post on X by MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
In fact, Heyman didn't list the Dodgers as Tucker's top pick. Toronto and New York seemed to get a little more leverage in Heyman's estimation, but he made sure to make it clear that the Dodgers were still in the picture.
Boy, were the Dodgers in the picture. They were driving the Brink's truck right to Tucker's front door.
Make no mistake about it. The Dodgers are going all in to win a third straight World Series championship. If the Dodgers faithful had any doubts about it, then Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers ownership squelched those concerns.
King Tuck will roam the outfield at Dodgers Stadium. He's going from Wrigley Field, one of the most historic baseball stadiums in the MLB world, to another one in Chavez Ravine.
Dodgers fans, get ready to head out to Dodger Stadium on Opening Day. It'll be a game filled with camera phones in the air and maybe, just maybe, Timmy Trumpet can show up for Díaz to come out of the bullpen.
(Editor's note: An earlier version of this opinion piece had the wrong agent for Tucker listed. Dodgers Roundtable regrets the error.)
