Longtime MLB reporter Buster Olney indicates that San Francisco Giants might be willing to part with Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, and a whole lot more.
With the way that the San Francisco Giants' season has been going this year, will the ballclub decide to trade away some key players?
That's what longtime ESPN MLB writer Buster Olney intimated in a post on X on Monday night.
Olney's post read, "The Giants are open to offers for their three highest-paid position players — Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman — among other obvious trade candidates, like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray."
Is this surprising news to Giants fans? Probably not. The important names mentioned by Olney here are Devers, Adames, and Chapman. Arraez and Ray have had their names bandied about a lot.
Let's take a look at the statistics for Devers, Adames, Chapman, Arraez, and Ray at this point of the 2026 MLB season. The Giants are off on Monday and will open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on the road Tuesday night.
Devers, Adames Have BA Issues
Devers has a slash line of .235/.293/.706 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs. He's struck out 93 times while walking just 23 times. Devers has 21 doubles and one triple as well. Devers has a really big contract with the Giants, so that might be something involved with potentially trading him away.
Adames is hitting an anemic .229 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs. He's second on the team in home runs behind designated hitter Casey Schmitt's team-leading 15 homers.
Chapman is hitting .261 with seven home runs and a team-leading 39 RBIs. He has 17 doubles and one triple to his name so far this season. Chapman has walked 32 times, but struck out 62 times. That's not a great ratio, and the Giants might see him as a trade asset at this time.
What about Arraez? He's won three different batting titles in the American League and National League, all with different ballclubs. This season, Arraez is hitting .319 with two home runs and 26 RBIs. Arraez also has 14 doubles and six triples. Again, Arraez has been hitting the ball well this season.
Ray is 4-6 with a 4.42 ERA. In 73.1 innings this season, Ray has given up 66 hits and 36 earned runs. He also has given up 14 home runs to opposing teams. Ray has walked 36 batters and struck out 66 of them, too. Ray has a 1.39 WHIP.
Giants Lingering in Fourth Place
Right now, the Giants are in fourth place, but just by two games. Believe it or not, the Colorado Rockies are on the Giants' heels to get out of National League West Division cellar.
Giants first-year manager Tony Vitello has a veteran group of coaches surrounding him, offering guidance and wisdom to him when needed. Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey knows what it takes to play on a championship-winning team from his days serving as catcher for Bruce Bochy's squads.
San Francisco is 29-43, 16 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and nine games out of the NL Wild Card race. The Giants are 14-20 at Oracle Park by San Francisco Bay, and 15-23 on the road.
It will be interesting to see how Posey and the Giants' front office deal with potential trades as the MLB Trade Deadline draws closer.
