While the San Francisco Giants might be looking to make improvements going into the 2026 MLB season, they've been connected -- at least in the rumor mill -- to a two-time Gold Glove award winner.
Of course, the Cubs just signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a massive free-agent contract. The Cubs also have Matt Shaw in line to play second base on a long-term basis. At least, that's the chatter rolling around the MLB world.
But, to think that the Cubs are going to get rid of Hoerner? Well, one MLB writer simply surmises that it's not going to happen at all.
In a rumors' roundup, if you will, Bleacher Report MLB writer Kerry Miller puts a lot of cold water on any talk of trading Hoerner at this point. In fact, Miller calls any talk about Hoener being traded as simply "ludicrous."
"On the whole, Shaw had a solid rookie season, and he was much better in the second half tan in the first half," Miller wrote. "If they hadn't landed Bregman and had little choice but to roll with Shaw as the primary third baseman, they probably would have been fine with that.
"However, Shaw wasn't 'trade away an elite 2B just because' great," Miller added. "And the reason they signed Bregman shortly after trading for Edward Cabrera is because that's when they knew how much they could afford with the final splash of what they hope is a championship puzzle."
Hoerner is in the last year of his contract with the Cubs and will just have $12 million counted to the Cubs' salary situation.
Miller also added in his summation of any trade talk involving Hoerner is that there's been some chatter about Shaw playing some outfield in the 2026 MLB season. Still, Miller simply states that Hoerner is not going anywhere at this point.
Now, the Cubs want to get back into the MLB playoffs again this season. Last season, they ended up losing to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series.
But keeping Hoerner right now and not trading him seems to be the best bet.
Maybe Chicago does end up trading Hoerner during the season so that they get some assets in return for him. Maybe the Cubs don't want Hoerner to walk without getting anything in return for him.
The Hoerner situation will be worth watching as the 2026 MLB season rolls out.
