Rafael Devers joins Jeff Kent in the San Francisco Giants franchise record books, leveraging an explosive September power surge to make up for the team's horrific season.
Not only did Rafael Devers hit his 35th double of the year on Monday, Sept. 7, but he also hit his 36th.
It was a two-hit, two-walk game for the San Francisco Giants slugger as the team picked up their 60th win of the year.
At this point in the season, every minor accomplishment is worth celebrating, along with the fact that Devers has now joined the Giants' history book alongside Jeff Kent.
For the first time in 24 years, a Giants player has hit 35 home runs and 35 doubles in a single season.
Kent last set that mark in 2002, so it's been a long time coming, but Devers' recent power surge continues to put him among the best Giants to ever do it.
Devers has a 1.699 OPS in September
It comes with a 26-at-bat sample size, but Devers' numbers are out of this world. The 29-year-old has a 1.154 slugging percentage so far in the month of September, and while that will undoubtedly go back down, it's incredible to look at what he's been able to do these past few weeks.
Looking at his seven games so far this month, Devers has four doubles, five home runs, 13 RBIs, and he's drawn seven walks.
Teams are starting to walk Devers far more than they ever have before, and for good reason. This is a veteran who's slashing .423/.545/1.154, and he's been putting on a show since his first three-game home run streak back on Aug. 24.
Devers is already etched in Giants history alongside the legendary Willie Mays and Barry Bonds, so why not add another record to his resume?
The three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner has his batting average up to .260 this season, a number that was .230 back on June 12.
To say he's turned his season around would be an understatement. The sky is the limit for Devers in these final 17 games, and it's clear he's let loose and is swinging for the fences, but that strategy has paid off in a big way.
Remember, six of the Giants' final 17 games are against the Los Angeles Dodgers, so it'll be interesting to see how he matches up against some of the best pitchers in all of baseball this late in the year.
For the Dodgers, watch out, because Devers would love nothing more than to play spoiler and make sure they don't receive a first-round bye.
