While the odds of Marte being dealt are less than 50%, that doesn't mean some type of trade wouldn't get done at Winter Meetings.

Could the San Francisco Giants be a landing spot for probably the best second baseman in MLB? The Giants are among teams being pegged for picking up the Arizona Diamondbacks' player.

According to a new article from ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, Marte, while probably not getting traded, is among a list of free agents that could or will land on the free-agency market.

"The buzz: Teams believe they'll have a better sense after the winter meetings of the Diamondbacks' seriousness about moving the best second baseman in baseball," according to the ESPN article.

"Marte has a very reasonable five years and $91 million (plus a sixth-year player option at $11.5 million) remaining on his contract, which means Arizona would want a whale of a return.

"The scouting report: Marte is tied for the 13th-best player in baseball by WAR over the past three seasons (15.3 WAR in total)," the article continues. "He's 32 and is an average baserunner and defender at second base, so his value is mostly tied to his bat.

"That should last for a while, though, as he's well-rounded at the plate, having better-than-average walk and strikeout rates, power numbers, contact rate and on-base percentage."

Besides the Giants, other teams considered by McDaniel and Passan as possible fits for Marte include the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Athletics, and New York Mets.

Marte played his first two MLB seasons with the Mariners before joining the Diamondbacks in 2017. He's a three-time All-Star, including back-to-back appearances in 2024 and 2025.

In 2025, Marte had a slash line of .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs.

Could the Giants use an infielder who's both solid in the field and adds some pop at the plate? It would be a positive addition for Giants manager Tony Vitello in 2026.

San Francisco will have to take a look at how it wants to structure its roster. With the Winter Meetings starting on Sunday in Orlando, Fla., this will be a prime time for Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey to have any talks regarding Marte.

Of course, other players that aren't publicly known about could be on San Francisco's wish list. Still, even observing that the Giants are among possible landing spots for Marte should make Giants fans feel good. A player like Marte doesn't come along all the time.

His veteran presence in the clubhouse also could be a solid factor in making any type of arrangement for Marte to come out to the Bay Area.
