The San Francisco Giants balance a veteran sell-off against long-term stability, eyeing a prospect-heavy haul from the Texas Rangers for Luis Arraez.
The San Francisco Giants should absolutely be sellers, and Luis Arraez is near the top of that list.
While Arraez wants to stay and sign a new contract, this Giants team simply doesn't have the record or justification to keep him around.
Arraez has been one of the bright spots on this team, no doubt, but that's exactly why he's the shiny toy they have to brag about at the deadline.
This team needs to get younger, and while Arraez isn't nearly as old as some of the other veterans on this team, the last thing San Francisco can do is afford to hand out another hefty contract that ends up being a waste of time and money.
Bowden proposes Arraez trade to Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers could be busy at the deadline, especially with them competing in one of the weakest divisions in baseball. The American League West is an absolute toss-up, so it wouldn't hurt for a now-struggling Rangers team to add to their roster in the coming weeks.
Longtime former MLB executive and player Jim Bowden broke down his proposed Arraez trade as one of five he compiled for The Athletic: "The Rangers could use another hitter to create traffic on the bases, and that’s exactly what Arraez brings to the table... In return, the Giants would add left-handed pitching prospect Dalton Pence and third-base prospect Yolfran Castillo.
A closer look at these prospects
"Pence, 23, has reached Double A and has put up impressive numbers at every level he’s pitched at. He misses bats and knows how to pitch. He was the Rangers’ 2024 11th-round pick out of North Carolina," Bowden wrote.
He continued, "Castillo, 19, is an infielder from Venezuela who has played at two different A-ball levels this year, getting on base and stealing bases at a high clip. He plays both shortstop and third base and profiles as a table setter. This would be a strong return for the Giants."
In order to surround this team with young, hungry prospects who can eventually reach the level of Bryce Eldridge, this is the type of return the Giants should be looking for. They aren't in a spot where they need big league-ready arms or position players towards the end of 2026.
If the Giants mess up this trade deadline, they could be set back years. Keeping Arraez around and signing him to a long-term deal would go against everything guys like Bowden are pushing, so now it's up to San Francisco's front office to see how they want to handle things.
