Jung Hoo Lee’s opt-out concerns fade, giving the San Francisco Giants a powerful chip to land elite prospects before the deadline.
The San Francisco Giants appear poised to become sellers before this summer’s MLB Trade Deadline, and the organization has no shortage of players who could attract interest from contenders.
In fact, it may be easier to identify the players who are unlikely to be moved than to determine exactly which veterans will remain on the roster after Aug. 3.
Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray continue to be viewed as the most likely trade candidates.
Meanwhile, Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman have also been mentioned as possible trade options. However, the sizable financial commitments attached to each of those contracts make deals involving any member of that trio far less likely.
Jung Hoo Lee presents a different situation.
Although Lee is also signed to a significant long-term contract, the financial commitment is not viewed as prohibitive enough to eliminate him from trade discussions. Instead, one of the biggest concerns surrounding a potential deal appears to be fading.
According to Mark Feinsand from MLB.com, executives around MLB increasingly expect Lee to remain under contract rather than exercise the opt-out clause included in his deal after the 2027 season.
“Lee’s opt-out clause after the 2027 season could complicate a potential trade, though most expect he will forgo the opt-out and play out his contract,” Feinsand wrote.
That expectation significantly changes how rival teams could evaluate his value.
Lee’s six-year contract runs through the 2029 season, with salaries of $22 million in 2027 and $20.5 million in both 2028 and 2029.
The contract remains a meaningful financial commitment for any acquiring team.
However, the opt-out provision had previously created uncertainty. A team considering trading valuable prospects for Lee could have faced the possibility of controlling him for only a season and a half before he elected free agency following the 2027 campaign.
A concern that seemingly diminishes
The belief around MLB is that Lee is expected to remain under contract rather than opt out. That would help the Giants have a much easier time identifying potential trade partners before the deadline.
At 27 years old, Lee is hitting .302 with five home runs and 34 RBIs in 94 games this season. He also owns a .762 OPS, the highest mark of his career, along with a career-best 116 OPS+.
His combination of age, offensive production, defensive value, and contractual certainty could make him one of the more attractive outfielders available.
Several contenders stand out as logical fits.
The Houston Astros could benefit from adding a left-handed outfielder, while the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, and Atlanta Braves could also make sense depending on how aggressively each club approaches the deadline.
Even if San Francisco does not receive an overwhelming prospect package in return, Lee’s trade value appears stronger now that concerns surrounding his opt-out clause have largely disappeared.
His $113 million contract will still require careful financial consideration from interested teams, but the expectation that he will remain under that agreement beyond 2027 should remove one of the biggest obstacles that previously complicated trade negotiations.
Lee’s value
Lee has quickly earned a reputation as one of the MLB’s most fundamentally sound players. His approach is built around consistency, discipline, and an advanced understanding of the strike zone rather than relying solely on power.
Defensively, he provides dependable play in the outfield with strong instincts and excellent positioning, making him a valuable contributor on both sides of the ball.
His athleticism allows him to impact games in multiple ways, while his calm demeanor helps him remain composed in high-pressure situations.
Lee is also respected for his professionalism, preparation, and willingness to make adjustments, qualities that have helped him transition successfully to MLB.
At just 27 years old, he still offers significant long-term upside, making him an appealing addition for contenders seeking both immediate production and future stability.
His balanced skill set and reliable style of play continue to make him one of the more intriguing players who could become available before the trade deadline.
