When San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello saw his team beat San Diego Padres, it probably made him feel good.
For the San Francisco Giants, their 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Monday night might not matter too much in the big picture.
Don't tell Giants manager Tony Vitello that, though.
Vitello earned his first win as an MLB skipper as his team did just enough to not only give Vitello win No. 1 as a manager, but pick up the team's first win this season.
Things looked kind of bleak after getting swept at home in the opening series against the New York Yankees. The Giants needed some good news quickly. That was done with Monday night's victory.
As the final out was made in the game, Giants coaches came up and congratulated Vitello. Also, Vitello made sure to get onto the field and embrace every one of his players on the field in a moment of gratitude.
Once the Giants were back in the clubhouse, the ballclub celebrated a bit more.
""It's hard to comprehend because I’ve got the same disease as every other coach,” Vitello said after the victory, according to Giants beat reporter Maria Guardado of MLB.com.
“You want the proper guys to get their props that got it done tonight but also look ahead to the next game," Vitello said. "It’s an opportunity to win a series down here and continue things in the right direction. It’ll probably soak in getting back to the hotel, but yeah, it’s pretty special."
Harrison Bader homered for the Giants and Landen Roupp was excellent in his first start of the 2026 MLB season. Patrick Bailey and Casey Schmitt added RBI singles to support Roupp's outing.
Roupp allowed just two hits and walked two. It felt like a moment in time for Roupp, who sadly suffered a knee injury at Petco Park in 2025. That injury put him on the sidelines for the rest of last season.
Matt Chapman told Guardado that they put Vitello in a cart and celebrated with a beer shower for Vitello.
Now that Win No. 1 is out of the way, it's time for the skipper and his players to double-down and get that second victory. The Giants and Padres continue their series on Tuesday night at 9:40 p.m. ET (6:40 p.m. PT).
It's been quite a journey for Vitello, going from being head coach of the University of Tennessee's baseball program to the big leagues.
For one night, he was able to enjoy all that he and his players accomplished in defeating the Padres.
