San Francisco Giants starter Logan Webb wasn't happy with himself after tough opener against New York Yankees.

For Logan Webb, he wanted to get the 2026 MLB season for the San Francisco Giants and new manager Tony Vitello off to a positive start.

That didn't happen on Wednesday night.

Webb worked five innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) as the New York Yankees, behind an effective start from Max Fried, shut out the Giants 7-0 at Oracle Park.

Getting an Opening Night (in this case) start is not new to Webb. Going up against a tough Yankees lineup was not going to be a walk in the park. Well, Webb kind of got lost in the park while trying to propel the Giants to a win in the opener.

“It just sucks,” Webb said after the game, according to The Associated Press. “I put our team in the position that we were in. The first inning was great. The second inning, I get the guy to ground out on the first pitch of the inning. And then all hell broke loose. That’s on me."

At one point, Webb just screamed into his glove over his inability to stop the Yankees' offense.

Webb is a veteran pitcher who isn't afraid to take ownership when things don't go his way. Based on his postgame comments, Webb wasn't shying away from his first start this season.

Before leaving after five innings, Webb gave up seven runs (six earned) and nine hits. Webb did strike out seven Yankees hitters, though.

Speaking of strikeouts, Yankees slugger Aaron Judge became the latest member of the "Golden Sombrero" club. Judge struck out in his first four at-bats on Wednesday night. He eventually grounded out to third in his final at-bat.

"They just started kind of ambushing,” Webb said. “I threw all the pitches I wanted to throw. Not necessarily where I wanted to throw. They did a good job. I did a bad job.”

While it wasn't a great start to the season, the Giants are filled with veteran players like third baseman Matt Chapman who realize one game, especially an opener, doesn't become a team's identity.

“You feel good in Spring Training and then you come out and you don’t score any runs,” Chapman said after the game. “That’s just baseball sometimes. I’m not putting too much stock into it. We have a really good group. It was the first game of the year. Sometimes it doesn’t go your way."

On Thursday, the Giants get to have a day off. They've been busy. Not only did San Francisco open the 2026 MLB season against the Yankees, but they've played a couple of exhibition games against Sultanes de Monterrey at Oracle Park on Monday and Tuesday.

San Francisco and New York get back at it on Friday.
