Former Giants manager will be working closely with president of baseball operations (and his old catcher) Buster Posey.

With a new manager in Tony Vitello who has no major-league experience, leading the San Francisco Giants, he is going to need as much help as possible along the way.

So, why not bring back a World Series-winning manager as part of the team's leadership?

It was a no-brainer as Bruce Bochy, on Monday, rejoined the Giants as a special advisor to baseball operations. Bochy will work closely with Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey, who used to cover home plate for Bochy in his playing days.

After Bochy was not retained by the Texas Rangers, there was some scuttlebutt out there that the Giants might want to bring him back in a managerial role. But that was not the case as Giants management chose Vitello, who was head coach at the University of Tennessee.

Bochy has won four Fall Classics as a manager, including bringing The Commissioner's Trophy back to the Bay Area. Bochy is beloved by Giants fans and getting him to return to the ballclub can only be viewed a positive move.

"Having Boch back in the organization means a great deal to all of us," Posey said in a statement, according to MLB.com. "His experience, leadership and feel for the game are unmatched, and his perspective will be invaluable as we continue building towards sustained success."

As for Bochy, he said, "I couldn’t be more excited to reconnect with the Giants organization and so many familiar faces. This organization and city mean a lot to me and my family, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute in any way I can."

Bochy was the Giants manager between 2007-19. During his tenure, San Francisco won three World Series championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Bochy led the Rangers to their first World Series title in 2022, but the following two seasons weren't as good for the ballclub.

Bochy and the Rangers decided to part ways after the 2025 MLB season ended and Texas decided to move Skip Schumaker from an advisory role back into the dugout as their manager.

Before hiring Vitello, Posey asked Bochy and another World Series-winning former manager in Dusty Baker, who also is an advisor with the Giants, to talk with Vitello. Based on what Posey and Giants management heard from them, Vitello received high marks.

"We are thrilled to welcome Boch back to the Giants family as a Special Advisor to Baseball Operations," Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said in a statement on Monday. "Few people in baseball have his depth of knowledge, insight and lived experience of the game. He shares a rich history with our organization and fans, and it’s special to have him back in orange and black."

Giants fans can look forward to having Bochy's voice as one of those who will lead Vitello and the ballclub next season.
