A massive roster overhaul forces San Francisco to lean on reinforcements after losing key starters to the injured list, testing the depth of a squad prioritizing future development.
It's safe to say the injury bug has hit the San Francisco Giants, but at least it hit them when they were 53-78 and not fighting to make the playoffs.
If anything, this team is simply fighting not to be last place in the National League West.
As part of a major roster overhaul on Monday, Aug. 24, the team announced a grand total of 10 moves, highlighted by Willy Adames, Victor Bericoto, and JT Brubaker all going on the Injured List.
Adames, the team's everyday shortstop, was placed on the 10-day IL with a left elbow sprain. Outfielder Bericoto joins him on the 10-day IL due to a right knee bone bruise, and pitcher Brubaker goes on the 15-day IL with bruised ribs.

While they may have lost this trio of players on the same day, it didn't affect the results of their game at night. The Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 5-0, in an impressive showing led by Rafael Devers.
Devers hit a monstrous three-run home run as part of the five runs San Francisco would put up against Cy Young candidate Chase Burns, someone who couldn't even last four innings against the Giants, a team that is 25 games under .500.
Regardless, it still hurts tremendously to lose so much talent. The Giants have gone all in on their young players this season, and rightfully so, but it's even more surprising to know they shut out the Reds without star rookie Bryce Eldridge, as the infielder was placed on the Bereavement List and will likely miss the entire series.
Giants option Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, recall five players
Even with Brubaker going on the IL, it's clear Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson wasn't the answer. Fresh off picking up his first career loss, the Giants made their intentions known: Wilkinson needs more time, and they don't want to rush his development.
In his place, they recalled right-handed pitchers Anthony Molina and Ryan Walker along with infielders Nate Furman and Shay Whitcomb, and finally added outfielder Grant McCray.
This team looks nothing like the Giants roster coming into the 2026 season, but that's the name of the game. Things simply have not gone their way, but despite all of that, there are still a few major bright spots when looking a few years ahead.
At this point in time, the Giants know they need to prioritize the health of their long-term superstars, and they can't make a mistake by rushing someone like Wilkinson, so his optioning back to Triple-A makes perfect sense.
