The San Francisco Giants knocked Cy Young candidate Chase Burns out early before Rafael Devers’ three-run blast fueled a dominant victory.
The San Francisco Giants offense hasn't exactly been that great this season, but somehow, they managed to score five runs against Cy Young candidate Chase Burns.
Burns exited the game after just 3.2 innings, marking his shortest start of the season. Not only was it his shortest start of the year, but the Giants allowed Burns to record only 11 outs, his fewest number recorded in a game since October 1, 2025.
The 23-year-old had no idea what hit him as the Giants put on a show, resulting in a 5-0 shutout victory.
Now, San Francisco has a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time since July 29-30. Somehow, it's been nearly a month since this team has won consecutive games, but they have a chance to end that streak against the Cincinnati Reds' Brady Singer in game two.
Giants chase Burns in 3.2 innings
When looking at the box score, it would've been easy to assume that Burns had another gem and the Giants simply got to the Reds bullpen. That was the case when he faced this team earlier in the year, but San Francisco won the battle the second time around.
Burns' ERA jumped from 2.51 to 2.77 as he allowed five earned runs on nine hits. It marks the most hits he's allowed in a start since June 27, and it's surprisingly the fourth time this season he's allowed five runs in a game.
In the end, the Giants outhit the Reds, 10-5, so that really puts things into perspective as to how good the Reds bullpen was in the opener.
Emilio Pagan allowed a hit in the eighth inning, ending a streak of 13 consecutive batters the Reds had retired.
Three-RBI night for Rafael Devers
With Willy Adames recently added to the Injured List, Rafael Devers knew he needed to step up as this team desperately needs veterans to guide these rookies through the remainder of the season.
Devers continues to play first base, and he went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and a pair of runs in this one.
His 27th home run of the season expands his team-leading total, and he's now up to 73 RBIs after his three-run shot with two outs in the second inning.
Elsewhere, leadoff hitter Drew Gilbert was also 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, and the hitters to immediately follow Devers in the lineup, Jung Hoo Lee and Turner Hill, each added an RBI.
