San Francisco Giants reliever José Buttó undergoes second surgery on right arm, out now for months.
José Buttó got some really tough news on Saturday, along with the San Francisco Giants and manager Tony Vitello.
Buttó was forced to undergo a second surgery on his right arm on Friday, weeks after undergoing a procedure due to a blood clot in his arm.
The recovery period now for Buttó is set between five and six months. That probably takes him out for a major chunk of the 2026 MLB season. It's a hard blow not only for Buttó but for the Giants and Vitello, too.
Thankfully, though, it appears that with some time to heal, Buttó will be able to get back to pitching. It's just not going to happen for some time, though.
“It was a little bit more intrusive than the first go-around,” Vitello said Saturday, according to Giants beat reporter Maria Guardado of MLB.com. “We’re looking forward to him fully getting on the mend.
"Now we for sure know what the runway looks like," Vitello said. "It'll be a little bit of a grind for him to get back, but that alleviates an arm issue, but also something that potentially could lead into a health issue. It’s good that he's gotten that fully taken care of.”
After undergoing the second surgery, Buttó posted a picture of him on his Instagram account smiling in a hospital bed. He shared an encouraging note with Giants fans and those who have followed his MLB career.
“Yesterday, I underwent a very rare surgery for baseball to repair a blood clot in my armpit that was limiting my movement and making it painful to pitch,” Buttó wrote.
“Thanks GOD first and Dr. Jason T. Lee and his team. The surgery was a SUCCESS!" Buttó continued. "Infinite thanks to my entire family and to everyone who has been sending their support and prayers. Now focused on healing and recovering 100% to be back on the mound.”
Giants, Dodgers Renew Rivalry
Giants. Dodgers. MLB. History,
That about covers the main words when looking at the Giants going up against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
These two longtime baseball franchises, with a rivalry dating back to their Brooklyn and New York roots, will go at it again starting on Tuesday at Oracle Park.
Don't expect Giants fans to offer a pleasant welcome to the Dodgers, either.
The Giants and Dodgers play night games on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a Thursday afternoon matinée wrapping things up. The Miami Marlins follow the Dodgers into the Bay Area for a three-game weekend series.
