As the San Francisco Giants make their way to Opening Day, the time to trim back the roster from Spring Training is already underway.
On Wednesday, the Giants sent some players down to Triple-A and back to their minor-league camp. Right now, the team has 45 players still in its big-league Spring Training camp.
In order to get down to a 40-man roster before Opening Day, a few other cuts will be made. But that's a little further down the road.
As for who was sent down, Giants beat reporter Maria Guardado of MLB.com indicated that left-hander Carson Whisenhunt and catcher Jesus Rodriguez were sent down to Triple-A Sacramento, where they will play for the River Cats.
Additionally, infielders Parkers Harber and Buddy Kennedy were shipped out to the Giants' minor-league camp, too. In case you missed it, on Tuesday, right-hander Blade Tidwell and non-roster infielder Jake Holton were sent out of the big-league camp.
But don't think for a minute that Whisenhunt and Tidwell will not be wearing a Giants uniform and seeing time at Oracle Park. At some point, they probably will be back up with the MLB club. That's not happening, though, right now.
“We're going to have these guys around us at some point,” Giants manager Tony Vitello said on Wednesday. “When, where and what fashion will be dictated by the circumstances. Some of it might be dictated by the players, but I do think it's key for all players to realize they don't have control of a lot of stuff.”
As for action on the field Wednesday, the Giants lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1. The game was shortened to eight innings due to the extreme heat in the Arizona desert, where the Giants and Dodgers play Spring Training ball in the Cactus League.
Shohei Ohtani got the start against the Giants and looked really good. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs, and struck out four. Freddie Freeman and Nick Senzel hit home runs for the Dodgers.
San Francisco scored its lone run in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out home run by Victor Bericoto.
The Giants will play the Cincinnati Reds in a Spring Breakout game on Thursday night.
