A grueling season of injuries and turnover leaves the San Francisco Giants on the brink of history as manager Tony Vitello fights to debut the team’s 71st player.
The San Francisco Giants entered the 2026 season expecting to improve. Instead, they will arrive at their final series with an opportunity to tie an unwanted MLB record.
After San Francisco won 81 games in 2025, president of baseball operations Buster Posey made the controversial decision to fire manager Bob Melvin despite recently signing him to a contract extension.
Posey created even more debate by hiring University of Tennessee head baseball coach Tony Vitello as Melvin’s replacement.
The Giants enter Friday’s season-ending series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at home with a 65-94 record. They will avoid 100 losses, but the highest victory total they can reach is 68.
A concerning record
San Francisco could also tie the MLB record for the most players used during one season if Zach Morgan appears during the final three games.
The Giants called up the infielder and catcher from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday and placed him on their taxi squad. MLB teams typically use the taxi squad to keep a player available in case someone on the active roster suffers an injury.
According to Justice delos Santos from The Mercury News, Vitello is determined to find a way to put Morgan on the field.
“Come hell or high water, I’d like to get him on the field,” Vitello said.
San Francisco has multiple potential paths toward adding him to the roster, but an injury-related move appears most likely. Infielder Osleivis Basabe reportedly has a tight hamstring, which could create the necessary opening.
If Morgan enters a game, he will become the 71st player used by the Giants this season.
That appearance would tie the MLB record established by the Atlanta Braves last season. Atlanta surpassed the previous record of 70 players, set by the Miami Marlins in 2024 and matched by the Baltimore Orioles in 2025.
San Francisco’s extraordinary roster turnover largely resulted from its extensive use of the Injured List. More than a dozen Giants are currently on the 60-day Injured List.
Every player from the Opening Day starting lineup is either injured or no longer with the organization.
Utility player Christian Koss is the only member of the Opening Day 26-man roster expected to play this weekend. Pitcher Landen Roupp is the only other active player from that roster, but the Giants have shut him down for the remainder of the season.
Morgan’s upside
Morgan’s versatility makes him a useful option during this final series. His ability to work as an infielder or catcher gives Vitello several ways to introduce him without limiting the roster to one positional need.
Joining the team this late also requires preparation and adaptability. Morgan must remain ready without knowing whether Basabe’s hamstring or another development will create an opportunity.
A first appearance would represent an important personal achievement for Morgan. For the Giants, it would complete a record that reflects the injuries, transactions and instability that defined their season.
Facing the rival Dodgers, that is the only history San Francisco has left to pursue. Considering how the year unfolded, it would be a fitting conclusion.
