The San Francisco Giants have made their first trade ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline on Sunday, sending pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves.

In return, Atlanta is sending right-handed pitcher Anthony Molina to the Giants. The initial report on this trade came in a post on X from MLB Insider Robert Murray of FanSided.
"The Atlanta Braves are acquiring right-hander Tyler Mahle in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, according to sources familiar with the deal. Anthony Molina is going to the Giants," Murray reported.
Mahle is 3-9 this season with a 5.13 ERA. In 18 starts in the 2026 MLB season for San Francisco, Mahle pitched 94.2 innings, recorded 89 strikeouts, and has a 1.39 WHIP. Mahle goes from a next-to-last-place situation with the Giants in the National League West Division to a first-place team in the Braves in the NL East Division.
Molina has been on a yo-yo for Atlanta this season as he's bounced from the big leagues with the Braves to their Triple-A team in Gwinnett, Ga.
In three games this season for Atlanta, Molina has pitched in five total innings, struck out two, and has a 1.40 WHIP. Before coming to the Braves, Molina pitched two seasons with the Colorado Rockies.
With the Giants out of postseason competition, don't look for this to be the only move that the franchise makes. First-year manager Tony Vitello has not been able to produce a winner on the field. A number of high-contract players either have been injured and out a lot, or they just have not put forth a solid effort.
Giants fans who look at the NL West standings on Sunday night see the team at 47-65, a .420 winning percentage, and 22.5 games behind the front-running Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mahle provides another veteran pitcher in the Braves' rotation. He either might be inserted into the roster as a starter or potentially a long reliever. But Atlanta gets a guy who has pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers before getting to San Francisco this season.
Now that Mahle has been dealt, Giants fans are waiting to see who gets dealt next as Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey might be starting up a fire sale. San Francisco has some players to deal, too.
The doors appear to be open now for any team in postseason contention to look and see who they can pick up from a Giants' team that is not producing at all.
