Joel Peguero, Reiver Sanmartin suffer injury setbacks for San Francisco Giants.
If the San Francisco Giants were looking to get their bullpen house in order during Spring Training, then that plan took a step or two backwards on Wednesday.
News came out of Giants camp, thanks to MLB.com Giants beat reporter Maria Guardado, that pitchers Joel Peguero and Reiver Sanmartin will be out of action for a bit.
The Giants' bullpen situation remains something that Giants manager Tony Vitello needs to get hammered out before the 2026 MLB season starts later in March. With these two pitchers sidelined, that puts a bit more stress on the first-year manager to get the bullpen situation addressed.
Yet there is still time to make sure the bullpen is set up like Vitello wants right now. There's still time in Spring Training to make adjustments along the way.
According to Guardado, Peguero suffered a left hamstring strain while Sanmartin is dealing with right hip flexor pain.
Peguero was dialing things up to get some game action this week. But his hamstring became a problem again, sidelining him for a period of time. Giants manager Tony Vitello understands that Peguero will need time to heal from this injury.
“I know it's going to be a couple weeks where he's got to get that taken care of,” Vitello said. “It's one of those things that will re-occur if you push it too much, too early. … It’s going to be certainly more time in that case than the other one before he can get out there again.
"My hope is once that part is good, it's not like you’ve got to wait too long for him to build up his arm strength, because it's a lower-body injury,” Vitello said.
What about Sanmartin? Guardado reported that he was going to go and play for Team Colombia in the World Baseball Classic. But his injury ended up bringing him back to the Giants' Spring Training base in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Vitello believes that the WBC is now "a wash," in his words, for Sanmartin.
"I haven't spoken to him directly about that," Vitello said. "I'm sure he's a little bit disheartened or heartbroken about that piece of it. But fortunately, there's still time. It's not early in camp, but it's early enough on the calendar that he can get through a little bit of rest on that deal."
The injury situation with the Giants' bullpen will be worth watching. Let's see how the competition fares in the next couple of weeks. While Peguero and Sanmartin are sidelined, which is not good news for them, other relievers now have a chance to step up and show Vitello what they can bring to the table.
The Giants probably hope that their bullpen can be effective, of course, and help the team pick up some late-inning victories this season.
