While Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton hit homers, Cam Schlittler was on his 'A' game as New York Yankees shut down San Francisco Giants.
Years ago, the Bash Brothers ruled the Bay Area. On Friday, the New York Yankees' version of them made their presence felt at Oracle Park.
Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run and Giancarlo Stanton added a solo homer as the Yankees shut out the San Francisco Giants 3-0.
It's been a rough start for the Giants' offense as they've not been able to put up a single run on the board. But Yankees starter Cam Schlittler and Giants starter Robbie Ray were dealing throughout the early innings.
Ray was humming along, though, until facing Judge in the sixth inning. Judge, the Yankees' slugger who was hitless at this point, took a Ray pitch and sent it soaring over the left-field fence. What a way to get your first hit of the season. That gave New York a 2-0 lead.
Giants manager Tony Vitello (pronounced Vye-tello) came out to pull Ray. He called upon reliever José Buttó to come on in his place. That choice didn't work out too well. Stanton took a Buttó pitch and also rocketed it into the left-field stands, giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
Schlittler threw 5 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out eight. It was a dominant performance. After Schlittler, Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought in relievers Fernando Cruz, Tim Hill, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar.
Ray went 5 1/3 innings, giving up five hits, two runs (both earned), no walks, and four strikeouts.
Going into the ninth inning, the Giants only had one hit. Matt Chapman, with two outs, walked and stole second and third base on catcher's indifference. Rafael Devers came up with Chapman taking third. But Devers grounded out to second, and that ended the ballgame.
For the first time in Giants' franchise history, they were shut out in their first two games of a season.
It's definitely not the way Vitello and his team wanted to start the season.
The Giants' lineup was just not able to crack Schlittler at all. He had all of his pitches working effectively, keeping Giants hitters off-stride all throughout the game.
With San Francisco now 0-2 to start the 2026 season, the Giants are going to try and break through the scoreboard, along with getting their first victory, on Saturday. Will Warren will get his first start this season for the Yankees. The Giants will send Tyler Mahle out in the hopes that he can quell the Yankees' hitters.
But it's the Giants who need their hitters to come alive.
First pitch at Oracle Park on Saturday is at 7:15 p.m. ET (4:15 p.m. PT) and the game will be shown on Fox.
