San Francisco Giants fans were probably glued to TV sets either at home or at a sports bar as Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb looked fantastic.
Webb, the sterling right-hander for the Giants' rotation, simply had every single pitch in his arsenal working for Team USA in a World Baseball Classic game against Team Brazil. Team USA was the visiting team in this contest, which was played at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, on Friday night.
The Giants' hurler did get nicked for a run on a Lucas Ramirez solo home run for Team Brazil. But that didn't keep Webb from keeping Team Brazil off their stride.
He worked his fastball in on Team Brazil's hitters hands, then had them totally off-stride with a curveball and slider that looked awesome.
Giants manager Tony Vitello had to have been smiling from ear to ear with Webb's outing. Sure, Webb is not in Spring Training right now with his teammates. Yet he's getting some serious work in for Team USA.
Team USA was leading Team Brazil 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Team USA was quite patient at the plate throughout the game, drawing at least 11 walks against Team Brazil.
Aaron Judge, the slugger from the New York Yankees, got Team USA off to a hot start with a two-run home run. That got Team USA off and running in front of a loud crowd in Houston on a Friday night.
In the top of the third with Team USA up 2-1, Team Brazil teenage pitcher Joseph Contreras threw a wild pitch, allowing the Philadelphia Phillies' Kyle Schwarber to score from third to make it 3-1 Team USA at that point.
Then, in the top of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded, Team USA's Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins was hit by a pitch, letting the Chicago Cubs' Alex Bregman score from third for a 4-1 lead.
Then, the Milwaukee Brewers' Brice Turang hit a bases-clearing double, allowing the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh, the Boston Red Sox's Roman Anthony, and Buxton to score, giving Team USA a 7-1 edge.
In the end, Team USA posted a dominating 15-5 win over Team Brazil in Pool B action.
While Vitello and the rest of the Giants probably were watching Webb and Team USA play, they managed to pick up yet another Cactus League win on Friday.
Luis Matos went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs as San Francisco downed the Cincinnati Reds 6-3. Matt Chapman went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs while also scoring a run.
Giants pitcher Trevor McDonald went three innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, and two strikeouts.
