Watching Luis Arraez hit a couple of home runs for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic might whet some San Francisco Giants fans' appetites to see him do the same at Oracle Park this season.
Arraez is primarily known as a solid contact hitter. He's won three MLB batting titles in his career, so he's delivering at the plate a lot of the time.
On Saturday night, Arraez hit two home runs as Team Venezuela defeated Team Israel 11-3 at loanDepot Park in Miami. It marked the second time in WBC play that Arraez has had a multiple-homer game.
This, though, doesn't follow the natural pattern of Arraez's hitting skills.
Last season, Arraez put together a slash line of .292/.392/.719 with eight home runs and 61 RBIs. Over his career, which has seen Arraez also play for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, he has a slash line of .317/.413/.776. He has 36 career home runs in major-league play. Arraez has joined the Giants before the 2026 MLB season starts.
So, Arraez really isn't known for his longball hitting.
Yet he's delivered in the clutch for his WBC team.
Willson Contreras, Arraez's teammate with the Giants, was quite impressed by what he saw from Arraez during Team Venezuela's victory
“Arraez is a great player,” Contreras told MLB.com in an interview. “He was born, I would say, in the wrong time, but it's true: Luis Arraez is a great hitter. I just wanted to say that.”
Arraez now has four career WBC home runs for Team Venezuela. He trails the legendary Miguel Cabrera, who has six home runs in WBC play.
“It was kind of the Luis Arraez show today,” Israel manager Brad Ausmus said after watching his Team Israel fall to Team Venezuela. “He's normally more of an average-type hitter, but he was driving the ball today. … It was just all Luis Arraez.”
Sure, he might just be an average-type of hitter. But that didn't stop Arraez from flexing his home-run abilities on Saturday night.
Here's something to think about, Giants fans and followers: What if Arraez could, in some way, bring a home-run touch while playing at Oracle Park? That would be an incredible addition to his game.
Giants manager Tony Vitello had to have been wearing a huge smile on his face when watching Arraez take his cuts in the WBC contest.
Let's see if Arraez can continue to pop some home runs while playing for Team Venezuela.
