San Francisco Giants' utility player Casey Schmitt is expected to miss significant time after suffering a left knee injury.
The San Francisco Giants could be without one of their most productive players for an extended period after utility standout Casey Schmitt exited Monday night's victory over the Milwaukee Brewers with a left knee injury.
Schmitt was forced to leave the game shortly after reaching base on a second-inning single when he appeared to injure his knee while running. Manager Tony Vitello indicated after the game that Schmitt would undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, adding that the club expects him to be sidelined for a significant amount of time.
The timing is another setback for a Giants club already navigating a disappointing season and preparing for the MLB trade deadline.
A key piece of Giants' lineup
Schmitt has emerged as one of San Francisco's biggest success stories in 2026. After earning regular playing time with a dominant start to the season, he has remained a consistent contributor despite cooling off from his torrid April pace.
Across 409 plate appearances, the 27-year-old is batting .271 with 21 home runs and nine stolen bases, establishing new career highs in both categories. His ability to play multiple positions has also made him one of the club's most valuable everyday players.
While Schmitt has seen time at every infield position along with left field, his strongest defensive work has come around the infield, giving San Francisco valuable flexibility throughout the season.
Infield plans could shift
Schmitt's injury comes at a particularly difficult time, with the trade deadline approaching. The Giants are widely expected to move veterans before the deadline, with second baseman Luis Arraez viewed as a leading trade candidate.
Had Arraez been dealt, Schmitt was positioned to take over as the club's primary second baseman. His absence now leaves San Francisco searching for another solution if changes to the roster occur over the coming days.
Christian Koss replaced Schmitt after the injury and could continue to see increased playing time in the short term.
Chapman nearing return
There is at least one positive development for the Giants' infield. Third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to return this weekend after missing the entire month of July with an abdominal strain.
His return should help stabilize the left side of the infield after Schmitt had filled the everyday role at third base during Chapman's absence.
