Rookie Daniel Susac had three hits, and a few family members were in attendance as San Francisco Giants topped New York Mets.

Whenever a rookie makes his first start in the majors, it's worth watching what he does at the plate and in the field. The San Francisco Giants' Daniel Susac decided to take the plate route.

Susac, with a few happy onlookers in observance, went 3-for-3 with a walk as the Giants defeated the New York Mets 7-2 at Oracle Park on Thursday night.

While Susac was getting kudos for his effort, reliever Blade Tidwell also had a noteworthy night. Tidwell recorded his first major-league save against the Mets, who had trouble in the field at different times.

Back to Susac for a minute. A young Susac family member went viral and he doesn't even know it. Chuck Susac, the son of Daniel's brother Matt, wasn't a big fan of all the noise in the park. It's tough being a toddler in the middle of a major-league stadium, celebrating what an older family member did.

Susac, who started at catcher for Giants manager Tony Vitello, also has a brother, Andrew, who spent some time in the majors. At one time, Andrew was a backup catcher to Giants legend Buster Posey, who is now the Giants' president of baseball operations.

"I know he was a little unsure about whether the challenge was going to work in his favor, but it ended up being a huge deal in the game,” Vitello said after the game, according to MLB reporter Adrian Garro of MLB.com.

“Overall, he just looked relaxed, he looked like he was built for the moment," Vitello said. "And I don't think that happens by accident. I have been around people where they're kind of blessed with an innate sense of being calm in moments like that.”

After the Mets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Giants' Luis Arraez tripled to right field. Heliot Ramos scored, tying things up at 1-1. Matt Chapman doubled to right, scoring Arraez and giving the Giants a 2-1 edge.

With the Giants up 3-1 in the top of the third, Mark Vientos hit a solo home run off of Giants starter Robbie Ray to make it 3-2 Giants at that point. Ray pitched effectively, gaining his first win this season. Ray worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and two runs (both earned). He walked three and struck out seven Mets.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rafael Devers crushed his first homer this season. That extended the Giants' lead to 7-2.

David Peterson took the loss for the Mets.

The Mets and Giants pick up their series on Friday night at Oracle Park. First pitch is scheduled for 10:15 p.m. ET (7:15 p.m. PT). The two teams will play another game on Saturday night, then wrap up the four-game series on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants will get ready for another home series against Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and the Philadelphia Phillies.
