San Francisco Giants starter Trevor McDonald only lasted three innings as Miami Marlins pick up 6-3 victory.
The San Francisco Giants were probably hoping that starting pitcher Trevor McDonald could go out and give them some length on Saturday afternoon against the Miami Marlins.
That didn't happen as McDonald lasted just three innings as the Marlins picked up a second straight win over the Giants. this time by a 6-3 score at loanDepot Park in Miami.
McDonald now falls to 2-5 this season. In his three innings, McDonald gave up three hits, five runs (three earned), walked one, and didn't record a strikeout. Reliever Matt Gage came in and lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits, one earned run, walked one, and gave up a home run.
Marlins' Max Meyer Was Tough
Marlins starter Max Meyer raised his record this season to 8-0 with the victory. Meyer went five innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs, walked two, and struck out seven. He also allowed a home run in his outing. Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks came on in the ninth and earned his 11th save.
Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then added another run in the second. But the Giants tied the game in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1 at that point.
Jung Hoo Lee led off with a double and Casey Schmitt added another double. Drew Gilbert's RBI single leveled the score before the Marlins added their run in the second inning.
Schmitt's 16th home run, a solo blast, in the top of the fourth inning helped San Francisco tie the game again at 2-2. The Marlins, though, put some space between them and the Giants with a four-run fourth.
Jacob Marsee's RBI single, Xavier Edwards grounded into a double play but got another run home, and Heriberto Hernandez's seventh home run, a two-run blast, gave the Marlins their four-run inning.
Giants in Danger of Falling Behind Rockies
With the Giants down 6-2 in the top of the eighth inning, Schmitt's RBI double scored Lee and got San Francisco within 6-3. That, though, ended the scoring in Saturday's contest.
The Giants fall to 31-45 and remain in fourth place, for now, in the National League West Division. Don't look now, Giants fans, but the Colorado Rockies are putting together some wins and might just take over fourth place from San Francisco.
As for the Marlins, they go one game above .500 at 39-38, putting them in fourth place in the National League East Division.
Miami will go for a series sweep as this three-game series ends on Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park.
One has to wonder what Giants manager Tony Vitello can do to help get his team back on the winning track. As this season rolls along, it just might mean that San Francisco becomes sellers at the MLB trade deadline.
There is still a lot of season left, yet the Giants need to put some victories together.
