A frantic slugfest against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park ended in heartbreak for the San Francisco Giants.
In a game that saw 32 combined hits and 25 combined runs, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants, 13-12.
It's impossible to describe just how much of a rollercoaster this game truly was, but in the end, it was a heartbreaking loss for a Giants team that now falls to 57-82.
Despite recording eight hits off Paul Skenes in just 4.2 innings, the Pirates still managed to fight off a late rally, one that saw the Giants score five runs in the eighth inning.
The Giants immediately trailed 2-0, only to add five runs in the second inning. One inning later, the Pirates would lead 11-5 thanks to a nine-run third inning.
San Francisco scored two runs in the sixth and their eighth inning tied things up going into the ninth, only for Osleivis Basabe to commit the game-ending error with two outs.
Pirates walk it off to avoid extra innings
It seemed like a routine ground ball was going to send this game into extras, but Basabe felt the pressure and rushed his throw over to first base.
Obviously, it's impossible to put all of the blame on him as the Giants pitching staff allowed 13 runs on 19 hits. Basabe's error was the only one of the game, so in total, the Giants allowed 12 earned runs.
Shockingly, Logan Webb was credited with nine of those. He was only able to record six outs at PNC Park, needing 65 pitches to do so. The veteran allowed nine earned runs on nine hits in just two innings of work.
For once, the Giants bullpen actually pulled their weight and kept San Francisco in this game.
Evan Sisk and Luke Weaver struggled big time for the Pirates in this one as those two combined for five earned runs in just one inning.
It went down as Weaver's fourth blown save of the year. Four of the seven pitchers the Pirates used in this one gave up earned runs, but in the end, Mason Montgomery improved to 6-3 while Carson Seymour fell to 0-1 for the Giants.
Eight Giants finished RBIs
The big news coming out of this one was the fact that Rafael Devers stayed hot, crushing his 31st home run of the year in the second inning against Paul Skenes.
His three-run shot gave him a team-high three RBIs on the night, but there were two Giants who finished with two RBIs, and then five other players drove in one run.
Leadoff batter Turner Hill recorded a team-high four hits as he was one of four players to have a multi-hit game.
