Now that Tony Vitello will be heading into his first Spring Training as manager of the San Francisco Giants, can he lean into the veteran leadership surrounding him?
The Giants announced on Friday that the ballclub has put together a coaching staff to help Vitello maneuver through his first MLB season. Of course, Giants fans know that Vitello previously was head baseball coach for the University of Tennessee.
With Bob Melvin getting his pink slip after last season, San Francisco wanted a different voice and mindset in the dugout. They'll get it with Vitello.
Yet, it's also interesting to note who the Giants added as coaches. Ron Washington, who has been around the MLB world for a long, long time, is coming on board as the team's infield coach.
That's a perfect role for Washington, who has quite a reputation around the MLB ranks as an "infield guru." Throughout his time with ballclubs like the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, and Atlanta Braves, Washington has helped plenty of infielders improve their play.
Washington, though, adds another element. "Wash," as he's known by his nickname, has been an MLB manager with the Angels and Rangers. He knows what it's like to feel the weight of the world on his shoulders, trying to get his team into contention.
That's valuable insight for a guy like Vitello to borrow from this season. Washington will be more than happy to help this young manager out when he's asked for suggestions.
Another addition to the Giants' staff is Jayce Tingler, who also has MLB managerial experience with the San Diego Padres. Tingler also is a close friend of Vitello as both played collegiate baseball together for the University of Missouri.
Yes, there are other coaches on Vitello's staff for the 2026 MLB season.
But Giants fans should pay attention to these two men. Vitello might get ejected in a game or two this season if he's getting his dander up over a missed call or a strike call at the plate.
Should Vitello get the old heave-ho, then don't be surprised if Washington or Tingler take over as manager for a few innings.
That's not really a bad problem to have for San Francisco. Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey only had great things to say about Washington when asked about him at the Winter Meetings, held in December 2025 in Orlando, Fla.
The Giants have a pretty decent 40-man roster right now. But Vitello has a pretty solid coaching staff ready and willing to help guide him through this season.
Let's see how it all shakes out.
