San Francisco Giants Need Better Season in 2026 cover image

Four non-winning seasons in a row is probably too much for San Francisco Giants to take anymore.

If the San Francisco Giants cannot put together a winning season in 2026, then their fans might just wear the team's main phone out.

In the last four seasons, the Giants have posted 81-81, 79-83, 80-82, and 81-81 marks, according to Baseball Reference. Two of those records were in the last years of Gabe Kapler being the Giants' manager. Under Kapler, the Giants posted a 107-55 record in the 2021 MLB season.

But the Giants ended up losing in the National League Championship Series that year. After that, the team hasn't even been really in the discussion for a National League West Division title.

After Kapler was let go, Bob Melvin came on board. The Giants' management probably hoped that Melvin could return the team to its winning ways.

Well, that didn't work out at all. After two underwhelming seasons under Melvin's leadership, San Francisco went in a totally different direction. The ballclub didn't choose someone who had previous managerial experience in the majors.

Tony Vitello was plucked from the University of Tennessee's baseball program in the hopes that his mindset and attitude would turn things around.

With spring training in Arizona just around the corner, Vitello will get his feet wet in dealing with the MLB world for the first time.

Now, will veteran players like pitcher Logan Webb take Vitello seriously, or will they turn a deaf ear to what Vitello offers? A player like Webb probably will not do this. Other veterans are probably going along with Vitello's plans, too.

Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey really wants to see things turn around. Posey has been with the ballclub in its World Series days, so getting the club back in that mode matters a lot to him.

The Giants have a big road ahead of them. They have to deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the $400-million albatross around their necks, who are gunning for a third straight World Series championship. Los Angeles, of course, wants to remain kings of the NL West Division, too.

San Francisco did bolster its outfield by signing Harrison Bader to a contract. Bader has postseason experience, too, so adding him to the roster is a big pick-me-up for the ballclub.

Are the Giants good enough to post a winning record this season? That remains to be seen. The ballclub has a tough road ahead, of course, but it can push towards making the National League playoffs this season.

Vitello knows his job is tough, but he's going into it with clear eyes and a full heart.
