After Giants claimed Dean off waivers in November, outfielder is out of work now that San Francisco is bringing on pitcher Tyler Mahle.

Justin Dean put himself on the World Series map for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His name goes down in the franchise's record books and fans will never forget him.

Dean had been put on waivers by the Dodgers after the World Series victory. He eventually was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants.

It looked like Dean would have a spot on the Giants' 40-man roster going into spring training.

Well, his time came to an end on Tuesday. Dean is now looking for a new MLB team to call home.

According to a report from CBS Sports, Dean was waived to make room for newly-signed pitcher Tyler Mahle.

"Dean arrived in San Francisco in November via waiver claim, but he'll now depart the 40-man roster to make room for Tyler Mahle," according to the CBS News report. "Dean slashed .289/.378/.431 and stole 27 bases across 347 plate appearances with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in 2025, and he's likely to work as minor-league depth again in 2026."

The Giants have been doing some rehab work on their pitching staff. It looks like San Francisco is expecting great things out of Mahle in 2026.

But the ballclub needed to make a spot for Mahle. Dean was the odd man out.

Dean appeared in 18 games last season and only had two plate appearances. He didn't come up with a hit at all.

It's also worth noting that the Giants have a plethora of outfielders on the ballclub. Just how much play Dean would get would have been under question.

Yet, let's turn the clock back to Game 6 of the 2025 World Series between the Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays.

On a base hit to left field, Dean raised his hands in the air when the ball got lodged in the Rogers Centre's outfield fence. That play kept Toronto runners from scoring on the play. Umpires in the game called the ball a dead ball, forcing runners back to their bases.

When Sports Illustrated reporter JD Andress watched the play, he posted on X, according to Yahoo Sports, "The fact this is ruled a 'lodged ball' but then the CF has no problem picking it up and throwing it in is dumb. He didn’t even make an effort to grab it right away. Blue Jays might have gotten screwed."

There are some MLB teams who probably can use Dean in their outfields. Keep an eye on where Dean lands. He'll get another chance to show what he can do in the field.
