The Cleveland Guardians have full control over whether or not they make the postseason in 2026.
The Cleveland Guardians have historically saved their best baseball for the final stretch of the season. Since 2022, Cleveland owns a 68-40 record in September, which is the second-best in MLB over that stretch.
Once again in 2026, the Guardians are right in the thick of the postseason race. The bad news is that they aren’t alone in the playoff hunt.
The good news is that, unlike in 2025, when Cleveland needed to complete a historic comeback after a historic downfall from the Detroit Tigers to reach October, the Guardians control their own destiny.
As it stands before action gets underway on September 1, the Guardians are in sole possession of the final American League Wild Card spot. The real challenge will be whether Cleveland can hold on to the playoff spot as September continues.
Including the Guardians, four teams are realistically fighting for the final postseason spot: the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and Toronto Blue Jays. These teams are all separated by only 1.5 games.
The Minnesota Twins, who are 3.5 games behind the Wild Card, could also make things interesting if they go on a last-minute run.

Out of the four teams behind the Guardians, Cleveland will play three of them over the next two and a half weeks, starting with a three-game set against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
On top of that, the Guardians are still in the hunt to win the American League Central, too. They’re only 3.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox and still have a three-game series with them in the middle of this month.
If Cleveland does its job in this series, it could be in a firm grasp. If not, the Guardians would likely need some external help to grab a playoff spot, and even that might not be enough.
This is the message manager Stephen Vogt is giving his team as the final stretch of the season gets underway.
“We feel great. I mean, we control our destiny,” said Cleveland’s skipper.
“We're playing a lot of the teams that we're either competing for a Wild Card spot with, or that we're chasing in the division, and you can't ask for anything more.”
Although the postseason bracket technically starts on September 29, the playoffs essentially begin for Cleveland on the first of the month.
If Cleveland continues to win, it’ll be in the best spot to extend its season, and the team is well aware of that.
As Vogt said, “We just need to go play good baseball and win games, and we have control over that.”
