Unfortunately for the Cleveland Guardians, they were on the wrong end of one of these high-stakes series, as they dropped two of three games against the Detroit Tigers this week.
Cleveland's primary downfall against Detroit has been its biggest problem throughout the entire season; the Guardians simply didn't generate enough offense.
In the two games the Guardians lost, they scored a total of four runs and were even shut out in the series finale.
The biggest problem for the Guardians throughout this rough stretch has been gett hits with runners at second or third base, and that remained a seemingly impossible task against the Tigers.
Even though Cleveland logged three hits with runners in scoring position in their win, the team was still just 3-for-24 in this scenario and left 28 runners on base throughout the series.
One or two hits could've changed the entire outcome of the series, but they never came.

The American League Central is one of the tightest divisions in all of baseball right now. There's a world where the Guardians, Tigers, or Chicago White Sox could end up at the top of the division after all 162 games have been played.
One game could end up being the difference maker, and the Guardians did gain an extra one over the Tigers.
Cleveland entered the series having won all six games it had played against Detroit during the 2026 season. All the Guardians needed was one more victory to clinch the series over their division rival.
The victory came on Wednesday evening, and now, Cleveland owns the first playoff tiebreaker over Detroit.
In the event that both the Guardians and Tigers finish with the exact same records at the end of the regular season, Cleveland would get the upper hand in any potential playoff seeding.
It's nice that the Guardians essentially get an extra game on the Tigers with clinching the tiebreaker, but none of that will matter in the end if Cleveland can't get back to its winning ways soon, as their playoff chances continue to slide.
