George Valera once looked like the future of the Cleveland Guardians, but now he's a free agent.
The new league year has been active, not just for the Cleveland Guardians, but for many teams across baseball. Free agency is officially underway, not just for the Major League players, but for the Minor Leaguers, too.
One Minor Leaguer in the Guardians organization who elected free agency and is on the open market is former top prospect George Valera.
Cleveland signed Valera as an international free agent in 2017, and he finally made his MLB debut with the Guardians in September of 2025.
Valera taking the field for the first time was an incredible moment for the organization’s No. 1 overall prospect in 2022.
He suffered plenty of adversity while making his way through the farm system, including a gruesome knee injury in September of 2024. Just a few weeks later, Cleveland designated him for assignment, only to re-sign the outfielder to a Minor League deal later that offseason.
When Valera finally made his way into the Guardians lineup, it felt like he was a building block for the future. He logged a .748 OPS in his first month in the Majors and was even hitting second in Cleveland’s lineup during the ALWS in 2024.

Rebilas-Imagn ImagesHowever, the start of the 2026 season was not as encouraging for the rookie outfielder. Valera opened up the season on the injured list with a calf strain and was optioned to Triple-A just two weeks later. On June 14, the Guardians outrighted him off the 40-man roster.
Valera’s numbers at Triple-A during the 2026 season also weren’t as representative of him being a former top prospect. He finished with a .272/.365/.466 slash line,466 slash line with 12 home runs in 77 Minor League games in 2026. That said, the swing-and-miss remained an issue with a strikeout rate of 17.6 percent.
There very well could be a team willing to take a risk on the still relatively young outfielder, and that could be what he’s focused on this winter.
Valera is still just 25 years old and has produced some encouraging results at the big-league level, albeit in a small sample size. It’s understandable that he could be looking for a pathway back to MLB at some point in 2027, and there are no guarantees that will happen with the Guardians.
Cleveland gave Valera opportunities, but now it may be time for the former top prospect to move on to a new organization on the open market.
