At some point, the Cleveland Guardians must recognize what Ralphy Velazquez is doing at Triple-A.
The Cleveland Guardians’ trade deadline acquisition of both Jo Adell and Nathanial Lowe has largely been a successful move in improving the team’s offense in its own right. However, the team still desperately needs more pop and length in its lineup.
Cleveland’s front office hasn’t shied away from giving young players an opportunity this season (For example, Chase DeLauter, Travis Bazzana, Angel Genao), and there might be one more elite prospect ready to make an impact at the big-league level before the year is over.
The Guardians’ No. 1 overall prospect, Ralphy Velazquez, has been the Columbus Clippers’ hottest hitter in August and is starting to make a compelling case to get the MLB call sooner rather than later.
Velazquez has had a smooth transition to Triple-A. He really went through some growing pains at the plate in July when he logged a .203/.299/.419 slash line with 17 strikeouts.
Velazquez has taken off in August. The left-handed hitter owns a .375/.444/.964 slash line so far in the month. (Yes, you read that slugging percentage correctly.) That equates to a 1.408 OPS, and Ralphy has hit nine home runs in his last nine games, which leads all of Minor League Baseball this month.
It doesn’t matter that Ralphy is only 21. At some point, the front office needs to recognize what he’s doing at Triple-A and admit there’s nothing left for him to prove there, and that his bat could be used at the big-league level.

Velazquez has spent time learning the outfield throughout his Minor League career, and especially during the 2026 season. He’s started 17 games in left field after being promoted to Triple-A in May.

With Rhys Hoskins recently landing on the injured list, first base duties will go to Lowe and David Fry, but there should be room to squeeze Velazquez in there, too.
The left-hander does hit right-handed pitching better, but Ralphy still has a more than respectable .873 OPS off lefties.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out for both Velazquez and the Guardians.
President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti acknowledged the growth that Ralphy has made in just this season alone, but stopped short of sharing what else is on the prospect’s checklist toward a big-league promotion.
Cleveland could still use some more depth in its lineup, and with the roster expanding in September, it could be the perfect opportunity to get the top prospect on the MLB team.
