The Seattle Mariners are still feeling the emotions after coming one game shy of the World Series following a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 20.
Mariners All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh described the season as a "failure." Despite being closer than any other team in franchise history to a pennant, there is very little solace among the team and front office in how far the team made or individual accomplishments.
Regardless, Seattle finished the season as one of the best teams in the American League, and the team's manager, Dan Wilson, was recognized for being the only skipper in team history aside from Lou Piniella to lead his team to a division title.
Wilson was named the Sporting News American League Manager of the Year on Thursday. The award was voted on by Wilson's peers.
In his first full year as manager, Wilson led the Mariners to a 90-72 record and its first division title since 2001. Seattle earned five All-Star selections: outfielders Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodriguez, Raleigh and pitchers Bryan Woo and Andres Munoz.
Rodriguez, Raleigh and second baseman/designated hitter Jorge Polanco were named finalists for the Silver Slugger award.
"It's not about individual awards at all," Wilson said in an interview Thursday. "And I think, with some of the managers in this league, it's incredible company that you keep. Obviously very humbled by it. But still, coming off the season, and the sting that it is, it's still hard to enjoy it in any way. But very grateful for the recognition. But for me it's not about that. It's about getting this team to where we want to be and we weren't able to do that and that's the tough part."
Wilson was hired to his current role on Aug. 22, 2024, after the team parted with previous skipper Scott Servais, who managed the club since 2016. Wilson hadn't had any major league experience as a manager before being hired.
Wilson has a 111-85 record through 196 games as skipper, dating back to last year.
