Free agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez is reportedly drawing interest from the Chicago Cubs as the winter meetings get set to begin in Orlando, Fla.
Noted baseball insider Francys Romero had that information on social media:
The Cubs continue to explore the third-base market in free agency, and Eugenio Suárez is one of the names to watch in the coming days, according to multiple sources.
A 12-year veteran of the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks, Suarez has spent parts of three seasons with Seattle over two different tenures.
The M's re-acquired him at the trade deadline this season and he helped them advance to the American League Championship Series, though he hit just .189 with 13 homers in 53 games.
Among the streakiest hitters in the game, Suarez still comes with big power, even as he gets into his mid-30s. He had 49 homers in 2025 and has six season of 30+ homers in his career.
He's a lifetime .246 hitter who still possesses a good arm at third base, though his overall defense has regressed. He's a two-time All-Star and a great clubhouse presence.
He could, and the clubhouse would love to have him, but it seems like a reunion is unlikely at this time. The M's appear focused on bringing back Jorge Polanco and letting either top prospect Colt Emerson or youngster Ben Williamson win the third base job.
If they are unable to bring back Polanco, perhaps they will turn to the trade market at second base or turn back to Suarez.
Regardless of what happens, Suarez's grand slam in Game 5 of the ALCS will go down as one of the biggest hits in team history, if not the biggest.
Suarez would play third base or designated hitter. If he mans third, the team could move youngster Matt Shaw to second. Chicago also has interest in Alex Bregman and it looks like they are going to lose Kyle Tucker this winter.
The winter meetings begin on Sunday night and the M's have been connected to additional relief help, even after acquiring Jose Ferrer on Saturday. They have been connected to Polanco, as well as possible trade options at second, including a pair of All-Stars.
The winter meetings end on Wednesday and we'll have everything you need to know here, and we'll have multiple new episodes of the Refuse to Lose podcast out this week. You can stream them on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube.
