SEATTLE -- One of the most special moments of the Opening Week for the Seattle Mariners occurred before the season even began.
Last Thursday, prior to the M's season opener against the Cleveland Guardians, former Mariners first baseman David Segui delivered the "ceremonial first baseball" to the pitcher's mound in honor of his father, Diego Segui.
Diego Segui passed away this offseason. He is the only player to play for both the Seattle Pilots (1969) and Mariners (1977). He threw the first pitch in Mariners history and as the team celebrates its 50th season in 2026, honoring him was a perfectly appropriate way to start the season.
As for David, he played for the Mariners in 1998 and part of 1999. He hit .300 in that time with 28 homers and 123 RBIs (233 games). He had 19 homers in 1998. He also played with the Baltimore Orioles, Montreal Expos, Cleveland, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.
He recently told the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast that he considered Seattle the favorite stop of his career.
He also spoke about M's manager Dan Wilson, who he played with as well, and had nothing but praise for the team Hall of Famer.
Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson (6) signals for a pitching change against the New York Yankees during the seventh inning at T-Mobile Park. Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images"I mean let me just say this: the Mariners are in good hands with that guy. Like, he was the most stable -- great family man, by the way. He's that guy that you want your daughter to marry.
The baseball, on the field, he was always calm, composed. You never knew if things were going well or going bad. And then you had me and Lou (Piniella), who were the complete opposite. So Danny, you know, always took control of the game. He managed the pitchers really well. He knew how to talk him up, to get him fired up or to get him to calm down on the mound. You know, he's a great player. I mean, he was that quiet guy in the clubhouse that was—he was—you knew Danny's gonna be there. He's gonna be ready to go and be prepared. So the staff that they put together there in Seattle is a really impressive staff. Ey Jr. (Eric Young Jr.) at first, Kevin Seitzer, Kansas City guy, grew up watching him in Kansas City...."
Wilson has been the Mariners manager since August of 2024. He helped lead the Mariners to the American League Championship Series in 2025, with the M's advancing to Game 7.
Seattle is out to a 3-3 start this season entering play on Wednesday.
