Could Scott Servais take over the Minnesota Twins? It's looking like a possibility.

According to a recent report from The Athletic, former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais is a finalist for the managerial vacancy with the Minnesota Twins. The team fired Rocco Baldelli at the conclusion of a disappointing regular season.

After multiple rounds of discussions, the search appears to be focused on a group that includes ex-Twins bench coach and Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton, New York Yankees hitting coach James Rowson (who held the same title with the Twins from 2018-19), former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais and Chicago Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty, according to multiple league sources.

The Twins were one of the most active teams at the trade deadline, shipping off relievers Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax and Louie Varland, as well as contributors like Ty France, Willi Castro and Harrison Bader.

They do have Byron Buxton still, but there are rumors they could deal Joe Ryan in the offseason, further depleting the roster.

The Servais file

A former MLB catcher, Servais spent parts of nine seasons with the Mariners before getting fired in August of 2024. He went 680-642 with Seattle but only made the playoffs one time (2022), going 2-3 in that run.

He was fired in 2024 after the team blew a 10.0-game lead in the American League West. He was replaced by Dan Wilson who helped lead Seattle to the American League Championship Series this year.

Why he would be great

I've said this a lot on the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast. I believe that Servais is a great manager for an up-and-coming team and a team with low expectations. I think he gets young players to believe in themselves and you can point to some of the less-heralded Mariners teams as proof of that. He helps them punch above their weight class.

For a Twins team that is not expected to compete as they rebuild, he could be the perfect person to help stabilize the organization.

Why maybe he wouldn't

I've always said that Servais is great with the unheralded teams and (in my opinion) less great with the teams expected to win. While the Twins won't be there for a bit, does the organization want to hire him knowing he may not be as capable of winning once the rebuild is over?
