Jesus Montero, who was once acquired by the Mariners for All-Star Michael Pineda, was involved in a serious motorcycle crash last weekend.

DETROIT -- Former Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero is in a Venezuelan hospital after being involved in a serious motorcycle crash last weekend.

Venezuelan media had the initial reports while Tim Booth of the Seattle Times added more in a story on Tuesday. Booth included links to original reports in his reporting.

Venezuelan media reported that Montero was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by a pickup truck sometime last weekend. Details emerging from the country are limited, but reports indicate Montero’s situation is serious and he’s currently in a hospital near Valencia, Venezuela.

Still just 35 years old, Montero spent parts of five seasons with the New York Yankees and the Mariners. He was acquired by the Mariners before the 2012 season in a deal centered around former All-Star pitcher Michael Pineda.

Montero was supposed to supply power to the M's lineup, but it never really happened. A former top prospect, he hit just .245 in four seasons with the organization. He had just 24 home runs and 92 RBIs. His last season in the majors was 2015. He played at the same time as Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager.

As for Pineda, he eventually ended up spending nine years in the big leagues with the Mariners, Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers. He went 64-61 lifetime with a 4.06 ERA. He was an All-Star with the Mariners in 2011, but then didn't play for the Yankees until 2014 because of injury. His last season was 2022. He won nine games in that All-Star season with Seattle.

As for the current the Mariners, they are currently in the American League Division Series against the Tigers. Game 3 is set for Tuesday afternoon, though the game is going to start in a rain delay.

We will have more information as it becomes available. The series is tied at one game apiece.
