The Mariners filled a big hole in their lineup by agreeing to a new deal with Naylor

The MLB is still in the early stages of the offseason, but the Seattle Mariners have already had a successful one.

The Mariners' front office said at the conclusion of the year, which ended in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, that bringing back first baseman Josh Naylor was the No. 1 priority.

Seattle acquired Naylor in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 24.

The Mariners checked off that goal and reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with the 2024 All-Star, which would extend through 2030.

The M's formally announced the signing of Naylor on Monday.

There's still several players Seattle can sign to help shore up the roster for 2026, but Naylor's reintroduction has the M's lineup in a good spot.

Following the news of Naylor's new deal, MLB Network had a segment projecting the Mariners' lineup for 2026 as the roster currently stands.

According to the projections, Cal Raleigh would be the catcher, Naylor would play first, Cole Young would play second base, Ben Williamson would play third base, J.P. Crawford would play shortstop, Randy Arozarena would be in left field, Julio Rodriguez would be in center field, Victor Robles would be in right field and Dominic Canzone would be the designated hitter.

As the roster currently stands, Young and Williamson would take over for free agents Jorge Polanco and Eugenio Suarez, respectively.

Young and Williamson both made their major league debuts in 2025. They had sustained looks as starters at second and third base, respectively.

The trade acquisition of Suarez resulted in Williamson being optioned to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and Young went through a slump that resulted in Polanco returning to the field after being the team's DH for most of the year.

Young scored 24 runs in 77 games and hit seven doubles, a triple and four home runs with 24 RBIs. He slashed .211/.302/.305 with a .607 OPS.

Williamson scored 36 times in 86 games and hit 13 doubles and a homer with 21 RBIs. He slashed .253/.294/.310 with a .604 OPS.

Seattle didn't have a player on the roster or a top 100 prospect in the minors that's played first base for an extended period.

Signing Naylor will allow the Mariners to fill holes on the roster with players who have experience, if they are unable to find a third and second baseman in free agency or the trade market.
