The Seattle Mariners defeated the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Sunday afternoon behind a dominant start on the mound from left-hander Kade Anderson.

Anderson, the top prospect in the organization, fired seven scoreless innings against the Rockies, giving up just three hits and no walks while striking out seven.

It was the best start of Anderson's career, which is just six starts old at this point. He commanded all his pitches and worked both sides of the plate. He got ahead in the count and stayed ahead, tossing 61 of 84 pitches for strikes.

And if you're worried that Anderson just succeeded against a subpar Rockies team? Just remember that Bryan Woo, Bryce Miller, and Andres Munoz all gave up runs against the Rockies in this series: Anderson didn't.

The No. 3 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of LSU, Anderson is now 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA. He's made starts against the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, Athletics, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. He'll see the Angels again this weekend in his final start of the season.

The Mariners are 73-83 and five games back in the American League West race. They have a 0.2 percent chance of making the playoffs at this point. There are six games to play.

While Anderson is undoubtedly happy to be in the big leagues, he is up for some pretty serious minor league recognition: Anderson is one of three finalists for the MLB Pipeline Minor League Pitching Prospect of the Year Award, and he's also in the mix for the Minor League Debut of the Year. The awards will be announced on Sept. 28.

The other players up for the top pitching prospect award are Joseph Dzierwa and Anthony Eyanson, both of the Baltimore Orioles.

Eyanson and Josiah Hartshorn (Cubs) are up for the debut prospect award.

Anderson put together an unreal season at Double-A Arkansas before getting promoted to the big leagues in mid-August. He went 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 18 starts. He struck out 135 batters in 93.1 innings. He had a WHIP of 0.64.

In addition to his possible MLB Pipeline recognition, his season earned him the Baseball America Mariners Minor League Player of the Year award on Monday. He was also named the Texas League Pitcher of the Year.

The Mariners will begin the final homestand of the season on Tuesday night when they take on the Houston Astros at T-Mobile Park. The Astros are one game back of the Texas Rangers in the American League West race. They are trying to make the playoffs after a year off in 2025. The Rangers haven't been to the playoffs since 2023 when they won the World Series.
