The Seattle Mariners have been one of the hardest-hit teams this offseason pertaining to coaching.
Several coaches and executives have left the organization this offseason to take various different roles with other teams.
Assistant general manager Andy McKay left the organization to become the field coordinator for the Cleveland Guardians and third base coach Kristopher Negron was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to be their bench coach, just to name a couple major departures.
On Monday, the Mariners added to their coaching ranks.
According to a report from Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball, Seattle hired Nevada Wolfpack head coach Jake McKinley to take over as its MLB field coordinator.
“Being the head coach at Nevada for the last three and a half years has been the privilege of a lifetime,” McKinley said in Rogers' story. “From our President, to our AD, to our staff, and players, everyone here has performed at elite levels to elevate Wolf Pack Baseball continually. Leaving such a great situation was the most difficult decision of my career, but I am so excited to get started with the Mariners. They are a fantastic organization with an incredibly bright future. I can’t wait to get started with them.”
McKinley coached Nevada for the last three seasons from 2023-25. Last season, he helped guide the Wolfpack to a regular season conference championship and was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year.
McKinley's last stint on a major league staff was with the Milwaukee Brewers.
McKinley was the Brewers' minor league pitching coordinator from 2018-19, director of player development initiatives from 2019-21 and was the organization's vice president of player development from '21-22 before he was hired by Nevada.
McKinley also had several stops at the college level before being hired by Milwaukee. He was the head coach at Menlo College from 2014-17 and William Jessup in '17. He spent various amounts of time as an assistant with Sacramento State and Campbellsville University.
As the field coordinator, McKinley will be in charge of making sure philosophies and messages are translated for minor league players as they make the transition to the majors.
This current season, especially, that will be important. Top 100 prospects Colt Emerson, Michael Arroyo and Lazaro Montes are all projected to make their respective major league debuts in 2026.
