The Mariners selected the contract of corner infielder Patrick Wisdom ahead of their three-game series against the San Diego Padres

Ahead of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres, the Seattle Mariners brought up one of the post impressive power-hitters they've had in the minor leagues this year.

The Mariners selected the contract of corner infielder Patrick Wisdom, placed first baseman/outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the paternity list and designated right-handed pitcher Blas Castano for assignment in corresponding moves.

Wisdom is a professional veteran of more than a decade. He was originally picked in the seventh round of the 2012 MLB Draft by St. Louis Cardinals out of Saint Mary's.

Wisdom made his major league debut in 2018. He appeared in the big leagues for three teams across seven seasons from '18-24: the Cardinals, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.

In his last season in the majors, he slashed .171/.237/.392 with a .629 OPS across 75 games with the Cubs in '24. He hit seven doubles, two triples and eight home runs with 23 RBIs and stole five bases in as many opportunities.

The most games Wisdom's played in a single year was 134 with Chicago in 2022.

Seattle signed Wisdom to a minor league contract with a spring training invite Jan. 20. He put together a decent enough spring. He slashed .243/.263/.432 with a .695 OPS in 12 Cactus League games and hit a double and two homers with eight RBIs.

Wisdom began this season with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and has been one of the most prolific power hitters, not just in the Mariners' system, but the entire minor leagues. He's posted a slash line of .264/.371/.774 with a 1.145 OPS and has hit nine homers with 17 RBIs across 15 games with Tacoma.

Wisdom's nine home runs leads the minor leagues.

The most time Refsnyder can spend on the paternity list is three days, which extends through the series against the Padres.

San Diego has no left-handed starting pitchers slated to take the hill against the Mariners. But, the team has used the designated hitter role to sub in pinch-hitters against left-handed relievers. It wouldn't be out of the question for Seattle to do something similar with Wisdom, possibly as soon as the first game of the series.

Currently, Seattle's 40-man roster is at 37, but the organization is likely keeping spots on the roster open for the impending returns of utility player Miles Mastrobuoni (10-day injured list) and right-handed starting pitcher Bryce Miller (15-day IL), which would allow the M's to keep Wisdom on the 40-man roster beyond Refsnyder's paternity list stay.
