SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners made a major splash in the offseason by taking care of their No. 1 priority.
The Mariners formally announced a five-year, $92.5 million contract with first baseman Josh Naylor on Monday that will keep him in the Pacific Northwest through 2030.
Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto, general manager Justin Hollander and Naylor spoke to the media in a news conference Tuesday at T-Mobile Park. Among the highlights from the news conference were Naylor's affinity to his teammates and the city (and clubhouse dog Tucker), the consensus in vision between Naylor and the front office, his love for the clubhouse culture, the club's championship window and more.
Tuesday also provided a potential insight into what could be next for the Mariners.
Seattle was able to get the deal done with Naylor early in the offseason. Naylor acknowledged that his new contract can provide the Mariners more flexibility to find more pieces in the the offseason.
One of the potential targets for the Mariners could be another reunion, this time with veteran second baseman/designated hitter Jorge Polanco.
Polanco had a bounce back year in 2025 after an injury-plagued 2024.
In 2025, Polanco scored 64 runs in 134 games and hit 30 doubles and 26 home runs with 78 RBIs. He slashed .265/.326/.495 with an .821 OPS.
Polanco declined an $8 million player option, making him a free agent.
If Seattle does bring back Polanco, it will be the second year in a row the the team has re-signed him after hitting the open market.
The Mariners will likely have more competition for Polanco's services this offseason than last, but Dipoto is still confident in the team's ability to bring back the one-time All-Star.
"I do believe, and I don't want to speak for Jorge, I think his experiences were similar to Josh," Jerry Dipoto said after a news conference Tuesday. "And I can say the same about other players who've come through."
Dipoto added that the team has been in contact with Polanco and other free agents this offseason. He also clarified that he doesn't anticipate the deals being done as early as Naylor's.
Polanco, along with Naylor, was one of the team's better hitters in 2025. And Polanco could be the next domino to fall in the offseason.
