The Seattle Mariners officially announced the signing of first baseman Josh Naylor on Monday, one day after reports that the two sides agreed to a five-year deal.
The Mariners confirmed they signed Naylor to a five-year deal that will extend through the 2030 season in a news release.
ESPN's MLB insider Jeff Passan reported the deal is worth $92.5 million, which will pay Naylor an average of $18.5 million a year. The deal includes a full no-trade clause and no deferments, per Passan's report.
Before Passan's report on the value of Naylor's contract, Naylor and members of Seattle's front office commented on the contract in the news release.
“I’m going to be a Mariner again and I couldn’t be more excited,” Naylor said in the news release. “From the moment I arrived, everyone in the organization welcomed and helped me. The players brought me in and loved my game right away, and the fans were incredible. Seattle has the best (fan base) in baseball. They’re electric and support us through and through, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. I can’t wait to continue to play with these guys and bring the city a championship.”
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said that the team's No. 1 priority this offseason was to bring back Naylor. Not only did the front office accomplish that goal, they did it early and at a price mutually beneficial to the team and player.
"From his first day as a Mariner, Josh has been a perfect fit on the field, in the clubhouse, and in our community,” Hollander said in a news release. “We are thrilled that he will be with us for the next five seasons.”
Naylor, who the Mariners acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 24, was one of the team's best players through the second half of the regular season and the playoffs.
In the regular season, Naylor scored 32 runs in 54 games and hit 10 doubles and nine home runs with 33 RBIs. He was a perfect 19-for-19 in stolen base attempts and slashed .299/.341/.490 with an .831 OPS.
In the postseason, Naylor scored seven times in 12 games and hit two doubles and three homers with five RBIs. He swiped two bases and slashed .340/.392/.574 with a .966 OPS.
With the latest deal, Naylor will be one of the team's foundational pieces through the rest of the decade. He, alongside catcher Cal Raleigh and center fielder Julio Rodriguez, will all be on the team through the 2020s.
Seattle was reported to have $30-35 million to spend this offseason as a starting point. The contract with Naylor leaves the Mariners roughly $11.5-16.5 million to add more players to the roster.
